International Menstrual Dignity Day

We are women, We menstruate

Hello, I am Sofonie Dala, I am a woman, I menstruate. Welcome to the "Reusable Menstrual Pads" project for the plastic-free woman.

On May 28th, International Menstrual Dignity Day is celebrated worldwide.

The goal of this day is to break the stigma around menstruation, promote menstrual health education, and ensure that everyone who menstruates has access not only to menstrual hygiene products but also to quality education so they can manage their menstrual cycles with dignity and safety.

Although menstruation is a natural and healthy biological phenomenon, millions of menstruating individuals still lack access to basic menstrual hygiene items.

It is therefore important to mark International Menstrual Dignity Day, highlighting that we have already started projects and actions aimed at supporting menstruating individuals living in vulnerable situations.

In addition to physical impacts, menstrual poverty also affects emotional health and academic development. Girls often miss school during their menstrual periods due to shame or lack of proper conditions, compromising their academic performance and consequently, their future career opportunities.

Our research indicates that 1 in 4 adolescents have already missed school because they couldn't afford menstrual products.

Positive and Respectful Environment

It is essential to create an environment where menstruation can be openly discussed without shame. This includes combating taboos and stigmas associated with menstruation, promoting a culture of respect and support.

Menstruating individuals should have the freedom to fully participate in all social, educational, and professional activities, regardless of whether they are menstruating. This requires policies and practices that ensure inclusion and equity.

Investments in menstrual health and comprehensive sexuality education will remove taboos and put sustainable solutions in the hands of people who menstruate.
