[Coming soon] The 5th anniversary of the Africa Educates Her Campaign: A Powerful Glimpse into Sofonie Dala’s Legacy

Rekindling Hope: Five Years of Impact, and a Legacy that Shines On

There are stories that whisper, and there are stories that roar through the corridors of history. Sofonie Dala’s is the latter. This year, she is proudly celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Africa Educates Her Campaign, a movement that has changed countless lives across Africa. She is now worldwide recognized for her tireless and strategic work in Angola, especially during one of humanity’s most challenging periods — the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since 2020, when the world stood still, Sofonie chose to move — and not just move, but to reach. She ventured into rural, often inaccessible communities, knocking on doors, crossing dusty roads, and navigating rivers to identify out-of-school children, women, and girls — and help bring them back into the education system.

By the end of 2020, her commitment was undeniable. The African Union elected her as one of only five ambassadors for the Africa Educates Her campaign, representing the entire Southern Africa region. Her voice and vision reached millions when she was featured on AU/CIEFFA TV, delivering a powerful pitch that was not just a speech — it was a promise. Every plan she outlined for Southern Africa wasn’t left on paper; she executed them, and today, her work is well-documented and published for the world to witness.

Here is a glimpse of where her journey started:

At the end of 2020, Sofonie Dala was elected one of the 5 youth Ambassador throughout Africa, which will bring awareness of the campaign into the different regions of the continent. She immediately began advocating for the Africa Educates Her Campaign in her community and beyond.

Educational systems across the AU Member States saw significant disruption due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. As we grappled for more data and evidence, school closures aggravated learning and teaching inequalities, leaving millions vulnerable.

On 11 September 2020, the African Union International Centre for Girls' and Women's Education in Africa (AU/CIEFFA) officially launched the Africa Educates Her campaign.

"Africa Educates Her" is more than a slogan — it’s a call to action. The campaign raises awareness about the barriers preventing girls and women from accessing education during the pandemic, while rallying AU Member States, educators, civil society organisations, and youth to ensure girls return to school as learning institutions slowly reopen across the continent.

As part of this movement, AU/CIEFFA highlights the lived experiences of learners — especially girls — at all educational levels during school closures. It invites African youth to propose tangible solutions alongside development partners and governments, protecting girls’ right to education in times of crisis.

And Sofonie Dala has been one of the most committed voices answering that call — with action that speaks louder than words.
