Education Interrupted, Hope Endures: A Call for Change in Angola || Mariza – Chosen Light from Shadows. Part 4
A Journey of Struggle, Hope, and the Fight for Education in Angola
Introduction
“Hello everyone, my name is Sofonie Dala, ambassador for the Africa Educates Her Campaign in Southern Africa.
Our campaign is dedicated to bringing all girls back to school during and after the pandemic, ensuring that no child is left behind because of poverty, gender, or lack of documentation.
Today, I invite you to walk with us through the life of Mariza — a young girl whose story reflects the struggles of thousands across Angola.”
Chapter 1: Born into Vulnerability
Mariza was born in June 2010, in Luanda, into a family living below the poverty line. Her parents, without academic backgrounds, could not enroll their children in school.
Mariza and her four sisters grew up outside the classroom, denied the chance to learn simply because they lacked birth certificates and national IDs.
At just 15 years old, Mariza struggles to read and write. Her father abandoned the family nine years ago, leaving them to survive with their grandmother in a small, overcrowded house.
Her mother, Quimbita, illiterate and unemployed, once earned less than $20 a month as a cleaner. She dreams of education for her daughters but cannot afford it.
But one day, a new door opened for Mariza…
Chapter 2: A New Beginning
Moved by Quimbita’s plea, a kind family took Mariza in. For the first time, she was enrolled in a public school, starting in the 4th grade.
She began to draw, sing, cook, and even learned how to sew. She was also given a reusable menstrual kit — a symbol of dignity and care.
Yet, shadows lingered. Documentation threatened to take it all away…
Chapter 3: Family Struggles
Her schooling was threatened by lack of documentation. In Angola, both parents must be present to register children for birth certificates and national IDs.
Mariza tried calling her father, visiting his office, pleading for help. He never responded.
Her sister Laurinda explained how their mother, Quimbita, never finished school herself and feels powerless to fight for documentation.
During Christmas, Mariza returned home, pressing her parents to solve the issue. But weeks later, school resumed without her.
Quimbita lost her job, and survival became harder. She needed Mariza at home to help with chores.
And so, Mariza’s dreams were interrupted once again…
Chapter 4: Dreams Interrupted
A disagreement with her father may have worsened the situation. Mariza left school and returned to her mother.
We advised Quimbita to meet Mariza’s teacher, check exam results, and transfer her to a nearby school. But the cycle of poverty and bureaucracy continues to hold them back.
Mariza’s story is not just her own — it reflects the struggles of thousands of children across Angola.
Chapter 5: Critical Reflection & SDGs
Mariza’s journey reflects a national crisis.
- SDG 4 (Quality Education): Thousands of children are denied education due to lack of documentation.
- SDG 5 (Gender Equality): Girls are disproportionately excluded, perpetuating cycles of illiteracy.
- SDG 1 (No Poverty): Without education, families remain trapped in poverty.
The government distributes voter cards with ease during elections, yet fails to provide birth certificates and IDs for children. This contradiction leaves thousands illiterate, especially girls, silenced before they can even dream.
Conclusion
Thank you for listening to this story.
Mariza’s journey reminds us that education is not a privilege — it is a right. Yet, systemic barriers continue to deny this right to countless children.
Join us in the next episode as we continue following Mariza’s family — and together, let’s demand a future where every girl can learn, thrive, and lead.
