Government Studies New Criteria to Resume Scholarships at the World’s Top 300 Universities

The Ministry of Higher Education announced that it is working on defining new criteria for the resumption of the scholarship program aimed at the world’s 300 best universities, an initiative that has been suspended for two years.

The program, merit-based in nature, has the main goal of training highly qualified professionals in various fields of knowledge.

According to the National Director of Higher Education, José Luís Alexandre, the model prioritizes students with excellent academic performance and strong scientific potential. “It is a specific, merit-based program designed to train highly qualified professionals. These are young graduates or master’s students with high academic evaluations who compete and are later placed in some of the best universities in the world,” he explained.

Although no specific date has been set for reactivation, Alexandre assured that the program’s return will be accompanied by a “new paradigm,” currently under study. The focus, he said, will be on strengthening the training of scientists and ensuring greater efficiency in the use of resources.

“We are doing everything possible to reactivate this program. For two years we have not selected new scholarship holders, and at this moment we are evaluating how best to direct this initiative, especially toward the training of excellent scientists,” he stated.

When asked about the reasons for the suspension, Alexandre pointed to financial constraints and the need to assess the program’s impact. “There are financial factors, but also the need to evaluate efficiency and effectiveness, so that we can continue with greater security,” he clarified.

Meanwhile, he guaranteed that the government has kept the domestic scholarship program unchanged, considering it an essential pillar in supporting academic training within the country. For the current academic year, more than 10,000 scholarships are planned, with the selection process already completed.

“Internal scholarships have never been interrupted. Every year, INAGBE provides more than 10,000 scholarships. It is still not enough, but it represents a guarantee of continuity,” he emphasized.

According to Alexandre, the National Institute for Scholarship Management (INAGBE) will soon begin formalizing contracts with selected students. “Soon, INAGBE will visit institutions so that beneficiaries can sign contracts and begin their academic journey with guaranteed support,” he concluded.

✨ In short: The government is preparing new rules to restart the international scholarship program for the world’s top 300 universities, while continuing to provide over 10,000 domestic scholarships each year.
