From Africa to World Educates Her Campaign
She Never Let Go: The Education Journey of Sofonie Dala
Africa to Europe: One Girl, Three Countries, One Degree After Another
Congratulations!
Today we celebrate the successful conclusion of the Africa Educates Her campaign in Southern Africa.
Angola reflects a reality shared by many African countries: a girl's path from primary school to tertiary education is full of hidden barriers. We researched it. We documented it. And today we celebrate one story that proves what is possible: Sofonie Dala.
2. The Journey
At 5, she started primary school in Angola. At 13, she crossed continents to study in Russia, where she completed professional secondary education in 2010 and a specialist degree as an engineer in 2015. In 2019, she earned a postgraduate diploma at Rhodes University in South Africa.
And in 2024–2025, she took her journey to the United Kingdom as a Chevening scholar, the UK government's global scholarship programme.
Four countries. Four campuses. One determination.
3. Was It Easy?
No. Sofonie faced hunger, poverty and financial hardship. She faced illness, physical and verbal aggression, racism, bullying and pain of every kind, from childhood to adulthood.
Yet she was not lost to child marriage or teenage pregnancy. And she never gave up on her studies.
Critique: What This Story Tells Us
Her success should be celebrated, and it should also trouble us.
- It was exceptional, not systemic. It depended on individual resilience, not on a system built to support her.
- Many girls with the same talent never get the chance. In our own campaign cohort, only a very small number reached graduation.
- Foundational learning, teen pregnancy, child marriage, university admission, finances and wellbeing are still hidden barriers across the continent.
Recommendations
- Strengthen foundational literacy so no girl leaves primary school unable to read.
- Reform university admission to be fair to students from disadvantaged schools.
- Fund scholarships and living costs (transport, housing, books, internet, food).
- Provide retention support: tutoring, counselling, mental-health care, safe campuses.
- Protect students from violence, racism and bullying, and track girls' progress with gender-disaggregated data.
Conclusion: The SDGs (2:45 – 3:00)
